Japanese sand lance is widely found around Japanese coastal waters excluding Okinawa area, the Korean peninsula and Shandong peninsula. They live in sandy bottom areas of 40-80 m deep and often under the sand below the sea bottom at night in habit. In the Soya Straight area, they migrate to the north in summer according to the rise of water temperature, and then back to the south for spawning. They are a very important food for ichthyophagous fishes and sea birds.
The catch of Japanese sand lance is abundant in the Soya Straight area. In Hokkaido, the primary fishing season is from April to June for coastal fishery and from June to October for trawl fishery. Japanese sand lance is regarded as an important fishing resource in summer season.

It is estimated that the resource level of Japanese sand lance is low and the amount of resource trend is decreasing according to the CPUE in recent years. It is necessary to take account of the stock condition in Russian waters in order to clarify the precise resource condition.
